This quote aligned with my entire being: “System 1 treats available information as if it’s complete and builds certainty from inadequacy.“
As a Futurist who studies the Nature of Information and Uncertainty I could not agree more with this statement.
My three favorite concepts surrounding the inadequacy of information are:
1. VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity) - this expands the Known/Unknown box model, the dimensions clarify what we can, should and ought to know.
2. Knightian Uncertainty- Richard Knight posits entrepreneurial journey is a risky undertaking and that even with all of the compute power, there exists unknowable, incalculable complexity.
3. Willful Blindness - one of my favorite Ted Talks by Margaret Hefferman where she offers a masterclass in information that rests outside of ourselves, yet inside our reach - the weaponized incompetence of refusing to address things we could, should and have a responsibility to know. (https://youtu.be/Kn5JRgz3W0o?si=x7iZk_aJtAewAbVV)
Ultimately I agree with your perspective but as with all things business, I believe the core that you’re highlighting is that humans are and have always been at the center of “the work” resulting in innumerable complications in our complex relationship with ourselves, eachother, the environment, and our machines.
Hi John - Comprehensive systems thinking at work here.
I like how you tame the 12 biases with just three pillars - those are well-chosen.
Project Aristotle at Google and Amy Edmondson's work definitely point the way to the importance of psychological safety as a prerequisite for excellence and outcome delivery.
Thanks so much, Mike! What Google did with Aristotle seems to continuously be a source of inspiration and action for many companies and operators. So glad this one hit for you. Appreciate the support!
Love this WYSIATI (What You See Is All There Is) approach. Never hear of it.
Thank you my friend! Appreciate you.

So glad this one hit so true for you, Jeremy. Great reflection. Thanks for the Ted Talk recommendation. Hope you’re having an exceptional week!
Same to you!
Looking forward to many more great exchanges.
